Queer Joy as Resistance: Reclaiming Pleasure and Play After Trauma

This workshop centers on reframing healing beyond just surviving by exploring joy, creativity, and pleasure as tools for recovery for LGBTQIA+ clients. We will achieve this by highlighting the history and barriers the queer community faces in accessing mental healthcare, discussing the importance of queer joy in the face of oppression and trauma, and by utilizing interactive exercises promoting play, laughter, and self-expression. The interactive exercises will explore the best trauma-informed practices for integrating queer identities, including but not limited to language, approaches, and interventions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. Understand the historical and ongoing barriers to mental healthcare for LGBTQIA+ individuals.
2. Recognize joy and self-expression as essential components of healing.
3. Equip folks with tools to offer affirming, trauma-informed care to themselves or others.
4. Solidify learning through experiential practice and creative expression.
